Mary Cameron, a Highland widow with a son, doesn’t believe she is destined to find passion in her life until she meets Baron Valentin, a Nvengarian bodyguard who had been sent to Scotland to protect a princess. When Valentin was hurt in the course of his duties, Mary nursed him and learned his secret—that he was one of the shape-shifting peoples of the Nvengarian mountains, able to take the form of a wolf.
Valentin departed Scotland once the princess married Mary’s brother, and Mary hasn’t seen him since. Now he’s back, sent to keep an eye on the Nvengarian ambassador to England, who might be plotting to overthrow Valentin’s tiny kingdom.
Valentin hasn’t changed—tall, dangerous, handsome, mysterious—and he wants Mary.
Mary has been put in charge of a young lady, daughter of a late friend, and that daughter has proved a handful. Mary and the young lady are invited into the household of the very ambassador Valentin has been sent to watch, and danger soon follows. The ambassador’s wife insists on learning every custom of an English Christmas, no matter how obscure, keeping Mary running, as do the threats to the lives of all present. Mary and Valentin don’t have much time to explore what they might have had.
But Valentin’s people believe that the person one spends the night with on the longest night of the year—the winter solstice—will remain in one’s life forever. Valentin is willing to put this theory to the test, to discover whether he and Mary will surrender to the magic of The Longest Night …
The Longest Night Fantasy Romance Nvengaria Book 4 edition by Jennifer Ashley Romance eBooks
FINAL DECISION: This is a nice novella with some suspense and the romance between a half human, half logosh shapeshifter who acts as spy and assassin for Nvengaria and the Scottish widow who entranced him a year ago. It's a fun read with some emotional moments.THE STORY: Mary Cameron a Scottish widow with a seventeen year old son is lonely. A year ago, she met Baron Valentin a shapeshifting logosh from Nvengonia. The two shared some kisses and Valentin asked her to join him in Nvengaria. She never showed. Now the two meet again in London and Valentin has no intention on allowing Mary to escape him again.
OPINION: This novella like the other Nvengarian stories are a combination of historical and paranormal fantasy with a fairy tale aspect.
In this story Mary is a woman of thirty-five who has a seventeen year old son. The world tells her that she should be satisfied with being a widow and mother and respectable chaparone and not be concerned with love or sex. But she can't help thinking about both when around the sexy, younger man, Valentin. She thought about following Valentin to Nvengaria a year ago but got cold feet thinking about who he is. The truth is that they didn't know each other very well for her to give up everything to follow him.
Valentin is a man who has lived with the desire for revenge and the regret of making mistakes. He now wants to be with the lovely widow. He has been sent to London to spy on a potential traitor. But he has an ulterior motive...he wants to see Mary again. Outwardly self-contained but passionate, Valentin has no intention of allowing Mary to slip past him again.
I liked the older woman, younger man story here and I liked how honest Valentin was with Mary. He admires her for all her strengths. There is a decent suspense story here involving Valentin's mission. Because of the length of this novella, there is less plot and character development, but that works here because Mary and Valentin have a simple story between them and need the small plot to keep the story moving.
This was an enjoyable read and is a definite need to read for those who liked HIGHLANDER EVER AFTER and want to know what happens after...
WORTH MENTIONING: THE LONGEST NIGHT was originally published in A CHRISTMAS BALL. This version has been edited and expanded by the author.
CONNECTED BOOKS: THE LONGEST NIGHT is the fourth book in the Nvengaria series. The romance in this book begins in HIGHLANDER EVER AFTER and I recommend reading that book first even though the events in that book are explained here.
STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

The Longest Night Fantasy Romance Nvengaria Book 4 edition by Jennifer Ashley Romance eBooks Reviews
Jennifer Ashley is one of my favorite authors, and this series is my favorite. So glad I finally found Mary and Valentin's story. If you're like me, once you start one of Ms. Ashley's books you won't be able to put it down!
This novel was not up to Jennifer Ashley's usual standard in my opinion. It did not straddle the paranormal and Regency worlds comfortably, making the "fantasy" part rather superfluous. The basic plot and resolution was interesting, but not very exciting or believable. She always writes well, but I confess to being disappointed.
I didn't think I would like this series. Boy was i wrong!!!! Big time. Jennifer Ashley wowed me with the Mackenzie down and this was just as good. It is best to read in order but anyone is good. Thanks for making a chilly night toasty with feeling happy at the end. I look forward to the new Mackenzie read.
I really love reading books by Jennifer Ashley as they never disappoint. This final book in the Nvengaria series was a short, quick read but tied up the series very nicely. It didn't feel rushed and I didn't feel like anything was left unanswered. As with all of this author's books, the characters were likeable and I found myself rooting for the H and h. It had the requisite HEA ending leaving me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
I read the entire series when it first came out in print and loved it strong, loving, women. Handsome, adventurous men. Mystifying political intrigue and politics. And humor. The steady strength of the Scots versus the fantastical people of Nvengaria are a heady brew as they mix romantically and or politically. Jennifer Ashley has always been a brilliant period romance writer as well as a paranormal one. She gets the be s t of both worlds with this four-book series. Give yourself a great and read it.
This is a quick novella set at Christmas with a lot of action. Baron Valentin, and Mary Cameron were introduced to us in previous books. I love the characters and I love that the Hero is half werewolf. The heroine is a widow and not a young beauty, she has a college age son. Yet her hero finds her intoxicating. In true Jennifer Ashley style these characters are sensitive but have secrets. I love how they pine for each other, but do not want to show it. There is quite a bit of sexual tension and great passion as a result. There is a Court Mystery going on, involving plotting against the king of Nvengaria and there are also a lot of red herrings. This is a fun afternoon read and a fitting story for one of the side characters in the Nvengaria series.Loved it.
I have fallen in love with Nvengaria, with it's magic and its people, and with its stories. Jennifer Ashley has made this mythical country, set beside it's nonmythical neighbors, in this fascinating time period, come alive for her readers. I have loved all of the characters in this series, and Mary and Valorian are no different. It was wonderful to "see" their HEA unfold, and so fun to try to unravel the mystery of the Nvengarian ambassadors as they moved their political chess pieces about the chess board of England. I could not imagine what they wanted with Mary's stumbling friends. The answer was a good twist. I especially loved the ending of the story. I know this was the last story of this series, but I hope that 's. Ashley will give us more. I would love to have a story that brings every one back together again for a time so we could see how all the other characters have done after their happily ever after.
